Research and Memorial Site Normannenstraße
The Ministry for State Security (Stasi) was based in Berlin-Lichtenberg from 1950 until 1990. Building 1 is where its boss Erich Mielke had his office. Our permanent exhibition shows the methods the Stasi used to control the population, and a special exhibition displays espionage technology produced in the Stasi’s secret workshops. ‘Issued in Berlin’ is an exhibition on the Stasi’s ‘Offices for Travel and Visiting Affairs’ in West Berlin, and you can also find out about Radio Glasnost, which supported the East Berlin opposition from the West from 1987 until the Wall came down in 1989.
